Soul… A very soulful seventies session hear.. featuring the human voice in many wonderful forms. About 1979 i discovered amongst my hippie brothers vinyl collection the Ann Peebles album ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’ and my curiosity was well rewarded! Consistent and fully charged with cut after cut, her album has remained at the front of my Soul box always, alongside other excellent offerings such as Gloria Scott’s ‘What Am I Gonna Do’ and Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and artists like Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Terry Callier, Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson. Soul is everywhere, its the valuable essence of all good and authentic music, from Folk to Jazz! And funny enough i was deeply into Soul music before discovering Jazz… this session was aptly recorded at 6am in the morning while the sun was coming up and warming us up nicely for the Valentines session coming along soon!!! Enjoy…

Including a single track from the wonderful and uber rare Windmill Tilter album by Kenny Wheeler and the John Dankworth Orchestra (Apparently they have lost the master tapes so this album will never be re-issued)!!! Respect to the master jazz musicians on all these titles, to the real people… collect the real albums peeps!!! Play loud and enjoy!

Recommend the Courtney Pine X-perience on Sunday evenings…
Or even Digby Fairweather’s Sunday afternoon session… whose film Scenes From A Jazz Life i had a hand in directing, filming and editing, along with two of my brothers, a wonderful experience allowing me to also meet with legends of British Jazz George Melly and Humphrey Lyttelton, available from Zoltans Films …
RIP Oscar Peterson 1925-2007… With this special session we pay humble tribute to a true master of the art of jazz. During the latter half of my teens, Oscar Peterson had a profound affect on my life… silver and black Verve wax would be in continuous rotation on the turntable, taking me on that wonderful, colourful and emotional soundscape ride of pure jazz perfection. Playing his albums over and over, slowly, the keystrokes would melt into shapes of pure joy, or bend into weeping willows, such is the way Oscar Peterson makes the piano sing. Words like subtle, sublime, understated, majestic and perfection, can not even begin to describe this true genius of the ivory keys. If you ever want to understand Jass, start here… Most of the original Verve albums have fortunately now been reissued on CD and I recommend you buy any of them!!! Listen to this jazzcast with the lights off, the jasmine joss sticks burning and let the good vibes flow. Thank you Oscar Peterson for a first class performance, may you rest in Peace.
All tracks performed by Oscar Peterson, mostly during the 1950’s and 60’s, performers include Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Ed Thigpen, Charlie Smith, Irving Ashby, Milt Jackson and Stan Getz. Enjoy this 2 hour session…

In Woody Allen’s film “Play It Again, Sam” (One of his early, funny films), Allen puts on “Blues for Alan Felix”, written and performed by Oscar Peterson for the film, and the vinyl accidently gets launched across the room, with hilarious results… One of my favourite films…
