Special “Sunset Boulevard†session… acknowledging the musical talent, genius and contribution of three Legends who have recently departed this world: James Brown, Alice Coltrane and Sivuca. With this 2 hour set we explore only some of this huge library of music they have left us, including tracks: from James Brown’s most funky albums “Hellâ€, “The Payback†and “In The Jungle Groove†with a little jazz and soul; from Alice Coltrane’s excellent “Eternity†and “Universal Consciousness†plus a live appearance with husband John on a 20 minute long version of “My Favourite Things†(wow hold on tight!); and from Sivuca’s “Rendez-vou a Rio†and self-titled album, including the jazz dance classic “Ain’t No Sunshineâ€, among others.
This is by no means a ‘best of’, other far in-depth dedicated sessions can be found among the jazz casters online scene. Check out Bending Corners for two very good sessions by the Godfather of Jazzcasters…
BIG Respect, many thanks and may you all Rest In Peace; James Brown, Alice Coltrane, Sivuca. Read the rest of this entry »

Exploration session… let’s now begin our true exploration of jazz.
These sessions will be free of genre. This session contains a featured song and artist. Our song this session is three beautiful versions of Butterfly. Our featured artist is Syl Johnson with two extremes from his 1970 album Is It Because I’m Black, the funk floor killer Right On and the blues feel black awareness title track. We also have an atmospheric number from the Duke, 70’s funk from Africa, soulful groove from the Mann, gospel jazz from the Byrd, and an unusual ending with the other Duke. Enjoy…
Butterfly (Herbie Hancock)
Butterfly (Norman Connors)
Butterfly (Henry Mancini)
The Phantom (Duke Pearson)
Right On (Syl Johnson)
Why Dont You Play The Organ, Man (Memphis Black)
Uprising (Parts 1 + 2) (Antibalas with Jojo Quo)
Cajun Moon (Herbie Mann with Cissy Housten)
I’m Tryin’ To Get Home (Donald Byrd)
Is It Because I’m Black (Syl Johnson)

Thanks to MrPhipson for the photography and soundbite on this session, Respect.
